Between the north and south poles there are five imaginary
lines that circle the Earth. These are
the equator, the arctic and Antarctic circles, and the tropics of Cancer and
Capricorn. Within the tropics the sun is
sometimes directly overhead; outside the tropics this can’t happen because of
the curvature of the Earth. That means
that behind me in this photo the sun cannot be directly overhead, but in front
of me it can.
