Tuesday April 24, 2012: Tropic of Capricorn

Between the north and south poles there are five imaginary lines that circle the Earth.  These are the equator, the arctic and Antarctic circles, and the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.  Within the tropics the sun is sometimes directly overhead; outside the tropics this can’t happen because of the curvature of the Earth.  That means that behind me in this photo the sun cannot be directly overhead, but in front of me it can.
